NEWS - Governor Rounds Announces Disaster Designation

07/29/2010 - Pierre, S.D. – Gov. Mike Rounds announced Thursday that three South Dakota counties and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe will get federal financial assistance to help recover from June tornadoes, severe storms and flooding.

The assistance to repair damaged public infrastructure – such as roads, bridges and utilities -- is made available through a Presidential Disaster Declaration signed Thursday by President Obama. The aid is for Dewey, Perkins and Ziebach counties and the tribe.

“We are grateful that the President has approved this financial assistance,” Gov. Rounds said. “These counties and the Cheyenne River Reservation have been hard hit by severe weather conditions this summer, and they need help to get things back to normal.”

Storms between June 16th and 24th brought heavy rains, flash flooding and destructive tornadoes to the region. Many miles of power lines were downed, and both public infrastructure and individual homes were damaged or destroyed.

A disaster declaration authorizes the federal government to provide relief and recovery assistance for up to 75 percent of the eligible damage to public infrastructure in the affected areas.
