HERSETH SANDLIN TO HOST TRIBAL HEARINGS

07/21/2010 - WASHINGTON DC - South Dakota Democratic Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin says she's hosting a field hearing of the Natural Resources Committee, on Indian Education issues Friday August 6th at 10AM at the Cheyenne River College Center located in Eagle Butte.

Herseth Sandlin says that when it comes to education, the US Government needs to be a good partner with reservation schools and faculty.  In 2006, she says the chairman of the Education Committee, Congressman George Miller, held a hearing in Pine Ridge which resulted in a GAO study of No Child Left Behind which found that tribes weren't getting enough guidance in implementing the improvement program.

Herseth Sandlin says the graduation rate for Native American females is at 31 percent, and 28 percent for males.  The overall graduation rates for all students in South Dakota is 75 percent.

Herseth Sandlin says the conference will discuss high dropout rates, the low percentage of Native Americans who move on to college, and the need to improve curriculum, facilities, technology and quality of instruction.
