ABERDEEN, SD (AP) - High fuel prices are escalating busing costs for schools across South Dakota. The Aberdeen School District is estimating a $31,000 increase in those expenses, which grow to around $240-thousand. The school district's closest athletic conference competitor is Huron, which is 90 miles away. The Central Cobblers play host to Aberdeen Friday night in the opener for both football teams. SEATTLE (AP) - Jose Lopez drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning of the Seattle Mariners' 3-2 victory over Minnesota. It was the fourth consecutive loss for the Twins, who fell to two games behind the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska coach Bo Pelini acknowledges that he's feeling some anxiety as the Cornhuskers' opener against Western Michigan approaches. Pelini says you don't know what kind of team you have until you see it play against an opponent. He says he thinks he knows the character of his players, but he won't know for sure until Saturday. EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) - Vikings quarterbacks Tarvaris Jackson and Gus Frerotte will be on the bench for tomorrow night's preseason finale at Dallas. Coach Brad Childress says he hasn't decided who will start - either veteran Brooks Bollinger or rookie John David Booty. Both players will get one half to try to prove they're worthy of the Number Three quarterback spot.
UNDATED (AP) - Michael Strahan, who's making 2 million dollars a year as an analyst with Fox Sports, isn't coming out of retirement to help the New York Giants. The seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end turned down an 8 million-dollar offer from the Giants, who have lost defensive end Osi Umenyiora for the season with a knee injury.
NEW YORK (AP) - Serena and Venus Williams both won their opening-round matches at the U.S. Open yesterday. Roger Federer, who's trying for his fifth straight U.S. Open title, eliminated Maximo Gonzalez 6-3, 6-love, 6-3 in his opening round match.
