NEWS - Herseth Sandlin: No Politics in Franken Visit

07/21/2010 - WASHINGTON DC - Democratic Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin says it's silly to read politics into the inclusion of Minnesota Senator Al Franken at an August 7th meeting on Indian housing issues in Pine Ridge, during the annual Pow Wow there.

Franken, a long-time television comedy writer, and controversial liberal radio show host, beat incumbent Norm Coleman in 2008 in a hotly contested recount of Coleman's initial win; he has been the subject of much conservative debate over liberal political policies.

Herseth Sandlin told reporters at her weekly press conference this morning that Franken is a Senator from the region who shares her concern about tribes.

A reporter noted that some in-state Democrat groups were unhappy with Herseth Sandlin's Blue-Dog vote against Health Care Reform; she discounted the notion that Franken's visit was calculated to ratchet up excitement from liberal Democrats for her reelection effort against Republican Kristi Noem.
